At an elevation of over 1,800 feet, the city of Alpine was named for its resemblance to the landscapes of Switzerland. It is a rugged and diverse region situated in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains, and its eastern limits serve as a gateway to San Diego County’s wilderness areas, including the expansive Cleveland National Forest. A more rural community, 30 miles from downtown San Diego, roughly one-third of its residents travel outside the city for work. The city sits along Interstate 8 for easy commuting.
